"Suitable for Vegetarians"(?) - Label

I was used to buying 'Country Cup Soups' by Nestle which very clearly said "Suitable for Vegetarians" - e.g. Cream of Pumpkin, Cream of Vegetables, Cream of Mushroom with Chives, Cream of Tomato.

Later I was shocked to go through label to find "This is processed with equipment that also processes fish and crustaceans". How can they say its suitable for vegetarians? I sent them a letter but they never replied.

Then it is definitely not vego. I tire of squinting into the small print of ingredients to find out these things. I was eating a soup I also thought was vege until I found out it had used chicken stock. I felt like rinsing my mouth out with lysterine afterwards. We really need a V label or similar in this country for things that may or may not be vegetarian like soups, choc bars etc . Hopefully soon as we are still the minority amongst the hordes of unthinking meateaters, but hopefully we are growing!

When the same equipment is used for both veg and meat products, then this is a problem. Sometimes, however, it may not contain any animal products but have a warning saying "May contain traces of nuts and milk" or the like just to cover the company which produces the product from any legal action.

I used to work in the Serviced Deli of one of the major supermarkets in Australia, and I was APPAULED to find that the Low-Fat Vegie Paties we sold during the winter months, were made producing beef fat.

I warned ALL customers before purchase of these, and enquired as to whether or not a vegetarian would be consuming them or not, and was delighted when people showed concerned and changed their minds.

It just goes to show, nothing in this world is safe unless you grow it yourself.
