As you know, we have a two year ban on super trawlers until November 2014, to protect our fisheries and unique marine life from the destruction that these industrial freezer factory trawlers can reap. But right now, there is no commitment to keep that ban going beyond November, there is a legal appeal in the Federal Court that could bring it down any day, and Tasmanian Federal Senator Richard Colbeck has publicly supported bringing back the super trawler.
The Tasmanian Government has called an election for March 15 – we must use this opportunity to secure a commitment from ALL Tasmanian political parties, including the Liberal Party and the Palmer United Party, to protect Tasmania’s oceans and fisheries, and ban super trawlers in state waters, for good.
Please sign this new petition to the leaders of the Tasmanian political parties and ask them to ban super trawlers, and secure our fisheries and marine life, for good.
In 2011, over 96,000 people signed the petition to stop the world’s second largest super trawler from entering Australian fisheries. But we can’t stop there – we must make the 2 year ban permanent, or else our fisheries and marine life will face the same threat that people in Africa, the Pacific and Europe are trying to get rid of.
Please sign the new petition and help Tasmania become the first state to go super trawler free.
Thanks so much for everything you have done with us on this journey for our oceans,
