You will already, I’m sure, be familiar with Leo – the ex-laboratory cat who now serves as an ambassador to the millions of animals used in research every year. Leo has become somewhat of a ‘celebricat’ with his own Facebook page and an adoring fan base that grows day by day.
I would dearly love to take Leo’s story to the rest of the world, and with the assistance of some amazingly talented volunteers, have created a children’s book [i]Leo Escapes from the Lab[/].
My mind has been blown by the illustrations that have been designed for this book. They truly capture the essence of Leo, his little sidekick Alfie, his big brother Rocky and the human characters he has met along his journey. Needless to say, the book is a true story and the characters are all real.
The project has also been assisted by several people involved in early childhood education, and their advice has ensured that the story is age-appropriate (suitable for primary school).
In order to take this story to a much wider audience, I have set up a special appeal. My target is $8,000. This will enable the book to be published and made available internationally through major bookstores such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble, a local print run (for members, schools and libraries), promotion and of course an official book launch.
The significance of this story is that it will provide children with an understanding of how wrong animal experimentation is, and hopefully serve to influence future generations of researchers, donors and philanthropists.
