Posted: Fri Nov 30, 2012 1:04 pm Post subject: The Truth About Turkeys - Christmas Campaign
Every year in Australia between 3 and 5 million turkeys are killed for meat, the majority of which is consumed at Christmas time (though they suffer all year long!).
The issues facing intensively farmed turkeys are much the same as with broiler chickens - they are denied their natural instincts while being confined in heavily crowded sheds, living on sawdust covered in ammonia from their faeces and urine. These birds are fed a special diet to stimulate abnormally large growth until their joints are no longer able to support the weight of their bodies.
Turkeys are artificially inseminated by the factory workers, an invasive and degrading violation of their bodily integrity. At about 10-12 weeks, these infant birds are trucked off for slaughter.
Incidentally, the turkey meat found in most supermarket freezers may be from birds killed 2-3 years ago - a chilling thought indeed.
For these reasons and more, we are urging people to adopt a cruelty-free Christmas lunch - for the turkeys. To do this, Animal Liberation needs your help! In the spirit of tradition, they are once again embarking on the Christmas flyer campaign informing the general public about the issues surrounding turkey farming in Australia. This year they will be distributing leaflets in five different locations, so pick the date(s) and place(s) that suits you best and join us to spread the word!
