Animals Australia (AA)met with the Marketing Promotions Manager for Hungry Jacks to try and ascertain their animal welfare policies.

Their Marketing Manager had no idea how pigs were farmed in Australia so the discussion was an eye-opener for her and she understood the concerns of AA.

It was clear that Hungry Jacks has not had many queries relating to their animal welfare standards, or why they were not following their parent company Burger King's lead by phasing out caged eggs and bacon from facilities using sow stalls.

So letters arriving from community members at this time reinforcing this as an area of concern, and asking them to support more welfare-friendly systems, would be most helpful as we continue discussions with them.

It is highly likely that they will respond with the usual - that their producers comply with the industry code of practice, etc. so to pre-empt this it would be good to alert them to the fact that codes of practice do not protect the welfare of animals but exist to allow cruel practices that would be illegal if the animal were a cat or dog.

Please write to:

Mr Tim Tighe, CEO
Hungry Jack's
Level 6
80 William Street
East Sydney NSW 2011

Please also either send, or drop in a letter to your local Hungry Jack’s manager.

Here are a few suggested key points for your letter. Please put any that you use in your own words:

* Ask them whether they have a corporate social responsibility policy that includes animal welfare.

* Express your opposition to factory farming and why - particularly battery caging of hens and sow stalls for pigs.

* Explain that you are aware that industry codes of practice exist only to permit cruelty and do not protect the welfare of animals.

* Ask them to follow the lead of McDonalds and Burger King overseas by supporting more welfare friendly production systems.

* Explain that they would be publicly applauded and supported for taking the lead in Australia by making animal welfare a priority.

Thank you again for your valuable contribution!
