Animals Australia has launched a series of hard-hitting radio advertisements to highlight the suffering of factory-farmed pigs in Australia.
It also needs to shine the spotlight on those companies that purchase factory farmed products as they are playing a key role in financially underpinning the continuation of this cruel industry.
This is where your help is needed!
Coles and Woolworths are the major purchasers of factory farmed products and both have the purchasing power to demand high standards of welfare from their producers which would significantly reduce suffering. McDonalds, Subway and Hungry Jacks are also key players in the industry.
Please write to this 'big five' and ask them whether they have an animal welfare buying policy in place. (You can cut and paste the same letter and just change their names.)
Their standard response is that they only use suppliers that comply with the Code of Practice. So it is important to state that you are aware that the current code of practice permits practices which would be cruelty offences if the pigs were instead, cats or dogs. They will therefore know that using the code of practice as their defence in their response will be unacceptable to you.
You may wish to use some of the following key points in your letters. If so, please rewrite them in your own words.
* Inform them that you have become aware of the suffering of factory farmed pigs.
* Explain that you believe the severe confinement of pregnant and mother pigs is cruel and unjustifiable in any circumstances.
* Explain that you are aware that Coles/Woolworths sells a wide range of pig products (not necessary for HJs, Subway and McDonald's)
* Ask them if they have an animal welfare buying policy in place that opposes factory farming and only supports more humane methods of farming?
* Tell them you are aware that industry code of practice allows practices that the community consider unacceptable and that would be prosecutable cruelty offences if it were not for government exemptions.
* Tell them that you hope that their company will listen to public concern and use their purchasing power to force their suppliers to implement higher standards of care and more humane living conditions for pigs.
